Chandravati, a member of Shivji SHG in Ashapur Gadi village of Tiloi block in Amethi district is an empowered woman today. Prior to joining the group, Chandravati was very shy. She was very poor, having less than one bigha of land.  Her family has eight members including her two daughters and two sons. She joined the group about four years back. She took loans from the SHG to the tune of Rs 20, 000 on two occasions as below:

  1. Rs 5, 000 for vegetable trade by her husband. He purchases different kinds of vegetables from Raebareli mandi on a wholesale basis and sells the same on retail in nearby markets.
  2. Rs 15, 000 for the purchase of buffalo heifer, which has now become milch buffalo and started yielding milk.

Now, apart from cultivation on own land, there are two more income generation activities with the family i.e. vegetable business and sale of milk. The family is out of poverty. Chandravati had studied only up to 8th standard. However, after joining SHGs, she was determined to educate her children. Education of children was not a priority for poor and people never bothered about educating daughters.  In fact, breaking that norm has become her priority.  Both her daughters have become graduates.  Both her sons are students 12th and 10th. She is planning to purchase one more buffalo to enhance dairy activity. Family members are happy and SHG is running well.
