I 252. (August 02, 2019) : Maya Devi’s Progress Out of Poverty:

How the RGMVP Model helps poor household to get out of poverty can be better explained through the success story of Maya Devi. Maya Devi, w/o Shiv Bhawan Gupta is a successful member of Jai Bajrangbali SHG in Kamlanagar village of Shahgarh block, Amethi. There are 6 members in her family consisting of husband, wife, 3 daughters and a son. This landless family was facing severe poverty prior to coming in to the group and husband was working as casual laborer. After joining the group in June 2012 she has taken total financial assistance of Rs 85, 000 from SHG on 4 occasions as under:

  • Rs 35, 000 (Rs 5, 000, Rs 10, 000, and Rs 20, 000) for opening a restaurant in Kamlanagar market by the side of the road.
  • Rs 50, 000 for purchase of Jaimal set and other decoration items to be used in marriage.

From the above income generation activities, monthly income of the family is between Rs 20, 000 to Rs 25,000. Her restaurant is major income generation activity being located at prime centre in Kamlanagar market. She is educated up to 5th class and can talk freely with everyone. Her all 4 children are school going. Restaurant is being taken care of by her husband and during marriage season whenever husband is busy in decoration work she herself manages the restaurant. Family is out of poverty and all members are living happy life. She says boldly that upliftment in the family status is only because of her group which is well operated.
