Kaanti Devi is a member of Durga Maa self-help group in Purebarin village of DinShah Gora block in Raebareli district. She joined her SHG in 2007. Right now, she is the treasurer of her group and secretary of her Village Organisation. Twelve years in the group she is now a confident, Independent, empowered woman, who takes her own decisions but this was not the case before she joined her SHG.

“Before joining the SHG, I was not allowed to even speak in front of my husband, and other family members. I was not made a part of any discussion, or work-related decisions. My only job was to look after the house and my children.”

Earlier, her family borrowed money from a moneylender, the rate of interest was very high at 15-20%. Not only was the rate of interest very high, but there was no respect. The moneylender made us do his field work also.

After joining the SHG, she learned about financial inclusion and started to save monthly. Kaanti took money from her SHG on various occasions –

Rs 5,000 for paying the school fees of her children

Rs 15,000 for repayment of a loan

Rs 10,000 for purchasing a buffalo

Rs 5000 for purchasing a cow

Rs 25,000 for agriculture-related work

“Through the help of my SHG, I have gained knowledge on sustainable agriculture and livelihoods. I learned about 18 days of compost, seed production, SRI and SWI techniques. Currently, I am a seed producer. I voluntarily work as a Community Resource Development Institution in RGMVP. I have 2 cows at this point in time the financial condition of my family has improved drastically”.
