185. (March 27, 2019) : Nirmala: Empowered in all ways
Nirmala is a member of Jai Maa Lakshmi self-help group under RGMVP in Salya village of Sisva Bazaar, of Maharajganj District. She joined the self-help group in 2014.
Coming from the social category of Other Backward Classes (OBC), Nirmala led a very difficult life. She came from a poor family and had studied only till class 5. Her family used to borrow money from moneylenders, the rate of interest of which was very high. After joining the SHG, she started to save every month and took money from her SHG on various accounts –
Rs 4, 000 and purchased a cow
Rs 1, 000 for buying rations for a family
Rs 13,500 for agricultural purpose.
Rs 10,000 and opened a motorcycle service shop for her husband.
“Earlier, I had no knowledge of anything as I was not educated. Now, I am aware of the best practices related to agriculture and health. I did not have an identity, Now the Pradhan, bank officials and other women of the village know me. Through the help of my SHG, I have helped 156 women to get into MNREGA, and with the help of my block organization I have ensured proper drainage system in my village.”
“Today, I’m empowered in both the ways, financially and socially. My thanks to Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana, I have gained self-respect.“
The process which she went through under the three-tier SHG structure in RGMVP helped her to develop her leadership qualities. Today she is volunteering as an Internal Social Capital in RGMVP.
