Ramrati is a member of Parvati Self-Help Group and lives in Jamalnagar Mahuddipur village in Dalmau block of Rae Bareily district. She joined SHG in 2009. It was difficult for her to join the SHG earlier. Being a part of patriarchal society, she was not even allowed to visit her mother’s house. But soon she convinced them and joined SHG in 2009.

She said. ‘After few days of joining SHG, meetings became an important part of our life. We met and discussed health, livelihoods and agriculture’.

Ramrati has taken loans from SHG several times.

She first took a loan of Rs. 3000 and established a small ration shop. And then took a loan for livestock several times i.e. Rs. 25,000 for Buffalo, Rs. 20,000 for cow and again Rs. 35,000 for Buffalo. Then by taking a loan of Rs. 50,000 from SHG along with the income from other sources she bought an agricultural land worth Rs. 3 Lakhs.

Ramrati has learned the methods of sustainable farming and uses organic compost in her land. She also has a kitchen garden.

She has four children- 2 daughters and 2 sons and both are studying.

Ramrati’s daughter is part of the Young Women Self-Help Group.

She said. ‘I wouldn’t have been able to come out of these bonds of patriarchal society if I didn’t join the Self-Help Group.’
