89. Saraswati’s Story of Empowerment

Saraswati is a member of Radha Women Self-Help Group and lives in Taragademau village of Bhitaura block in Fatehpur district.

It was in the year 2011 that she became a member of Self-Help Group and she quotes:

‘From the day I joined SHG, meetings of SHG became an important part of my life, my interest and understanding of what self-help groups can do to bring a change in the society, helped me to become an animator, and I mobilised more than 20 SHGs’.

‘I did not visit just one district, but in fact; used to go to different districts for making SHGs, I have been to Banda district and visited door to door making women understand the meaning of empowerment through Self-Help Groups.’

Saraswati has taken loan from SHG several times. She first took a loan of Rs. 2000 for children’s fees, Rs. 5000 for irrigating her farm and then again bought an engine worth Rs 25,000. She later also bought a buffalo. She said that she irrigates the land of other women also, and investment in the engine has now brought a permanent source of income for her family. Through income and the loan from SHG, she purchased a plot worth Rs. 1 Lakh.

She has 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy.

Her daughters are postgraduate and one of her daughter is doing I.T.I .

Her son is employed in Petrol pump.

Saraswati is happy with all the achievements that she has made in her life. She says:

‘Earlier I wouldn’t know which date and month it is, and now I have been able educate and all my children’, said Saraswati.
